Dr. Allen is the Director of Geriatric Medicine and Lifeline Health at Riverside Health System in Newport News, Virginia. He is the former chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and medical director of the Institute for Senior’s and Post Acute Care at Summa Health System, in Akron, Ohio.

Dr. Allen graduated from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and holds a CAQ in geriatric medicine from the ABFM. He is a Professor of both Internal and Family Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Allen recently completed the Practice Change Fellows Program, a national leadership development program for geriatric leaders and clinicians and now serves on the national advisory board for this organization.

Under Dr. Allen’s leadership, Summa Health System achieved national attention for research, innovative models of care and success in demonstrating the value proposition of geriatric and palliative care to hospitals and the community. In his new role at Riverside Health System he is continuing this work to evolving a health systems approach to improving care for older adults and those with serious and advanced illness.

He has been a principal investigator for several federally funded clinical trials and his research interests include chronic illness care management and transitional care. As a geriatric medicine specialist and researcher, Dr. Allen’s work focuses on developing and implementing geriatric medicine services for older adults, their families and caregivers, and for physicians who provide the patient’s primary care. He has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles, book chapters and abstracts and regularly gives presentations across the country and internationally.
