Palo Alto Medical Foundation
Palo Alto, California

Dr. Steve Lai is a geriatrician and palliative medicine physician at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Palo Alto Division. He is currently the physician lead for the Palliative Care and Support Services, a community, outpatient-based palliative care program.

In 2004, Dr. Lai joined the geriatric and palliative care group at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He was a teaching attending on the palliative care inpatient consultation service and became Chief of Geriatrics in 2009. In 2011, Dr. Lai joined the geriatrics and palliative medicine department at Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Over the past year, he has served on the board of the California Association of Long-Term Care and assisted with improving palliative care education to long-term care professionals.

Dr. Lai received his medical degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and trained in internal medicine at Washington University-Barnes Jewish Hospital. He then returned to California to complete a clinical geriatrics fellowship at Stanford followed by a clinician-educator fellowship at the University of California-San Francisco. He is board certified in geriatric medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.
